Abstract:
This GIS data set represents the counties and shoreline of the state of Florida, including inland lakes and rivers, at a 1:100,000 or finer scale. Data obtained from US census 2013 files were downloaded by county from the US Census Bureaus data Download page (<http://www.census.gov/geo/maps-data/data/tiger-line.html>) and MERGEd to form the statewide data set. The "water polygons" and "counties" data were used to create this data set.
Purpose:
This data set visually represents the counties of the state of Florida at a 1:100000 or finer scale.
Supplemental_Information:
Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information. Coordinates in the source TIGER/Line files have six implied decimal places, but the positional accuracy of these coordinates is not as great as the six decimal places suggest. According to the Census Bureau, "the positional accuracy varies with the source materials used, but generally the information is no better than the established National Map Accuracy Standards for 1:100,000-scale maps from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS); thus it is NOT suitable for high-precision measurement applications such as engineering problems, property transfers, or other uses that might require highly accurate measurements of the earth's surface."

Downloaded shapefiles in Geographic NAD83 of the TIGER/Line data for "counties" and "water polygons" from the US Census Bureau's Web site (<http://www.census.gov/geo/maps-data/data/tiger-line.html>).
The counties data were edited in ArcMap to only include the State of Florida's counties. The WaterArea shapefile was ERASEd from this counties shapefile to create a statewide shoreline with county attributes. The shapefile was projected to Albers NAD83.
Digitization errors were fixed for two geographic areas in Miami-Dade county (Port of Miami and the Turkey Point Power Plant area).
The data were loaded into ArcSDE.

The boundary was updated between Martin and St Lucie counties to reflect changes made as per bill HB 800 passed in 2012 by the Florida Senate. The change reflects 129 acres of land along the eastern bank of the St Lucie River in Northern Martin County obtained from St. Lucie County which includes the Beau Rivage West subdivision.
