Abstract:

This data set represents the FWC Boating Restricted Areas as described in Florida Administrative Code Chapter 68D-24.

Purpose:

To depict the boating restricted areas as established for the purpose of regulating the speed and operation of vessel traffic for the safety of the public. This data is provided to assist in located boating restricted areas.

Supplemental_Information:

Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.
This shapefile is intended for visual reference only. There are known limitations including sliver gaps and overlaps between adjacent zones. A suggested reference scale of 1:12,000 or smaller scale views is suggested to minimize appearance of slivers. This data set is not intended for navigation or legal uses. For legal boundaries, please refer to Section 68D-24 of the Florida Administrative Code. The text of the FAC is "controlling and dispositive of the exact location of the boundaries of each boating restricted area" (from 68D-24.003).

Polygons were created from the Florida Administrative Code, Chapter 68D-24 Boating Restricted Areas rules of August 1, 2000, of which text establishes and defines boundaries of the exact locations of each boating restricted area. Polygons were digitized at a scale of 1:5,000 using USGS 2004 aerial photography. Some boating restricted areas have been updated to reflect more recent administrative code.
