Description:
Abstract:
This GIS data set represents a compilation of coral and other hard bottom type data available to FWRI as of July, 2013. The extent, time frame and/or resolution of source data sets vary. Mapping methods and minimum mapping units also differ among source datasets. This is not intended to be a comprehensive survey - data gaps do exist. Sliver polygons also exist due to differences in overlapping study areas, as well as some present in the source data sets. Refer to attribute table and metadata for references to source data.
Worm and oyster reefs are not included in this compilation. See separate data sets for worm and oyster reefs.
Purpose:
This data set represents hardbottom areas that have been mapped in and around Florida.
Supplemental_Information:
Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.

"Hard Bottom" and "Probable Hard Bottom" polygons were selected from this data set. In areas of overlap with other more recent data, the other data sources were used. The data classification was preserved in the compilation.
In the METADATA attribute - source studies are listed. These codes are as follows:
CA02 = Field Survey of the Fernandina Harbor Candidate Ocean Dredge Material Disposal Site, 22 May 1986. A field survey of a proposed offshore dredged material disposal site, where extensive hard bottom was found, and a candidate offshore dredged material disposal site, which contained no hard bottom, in the vicinity of the Fernandina Harbor area (Continental Shelf Associates, Inc., 1986). The disposal sites were sampled using SCUBA, video, and fathometer to determine bottom type.

CEXX = U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville Dist., Coast of Florida Erosion and Storm Effects Study. Data were provided by the USACOE, Jacksonville Office, on hard-bottom habitat off Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. The data were collected during the Coast of Florida Erosion and Storm Effects Study. The data were collected during a side-scan sonar mapping survey by Continental Shelf Associates, Inc.
FL08 = Indian Riv. Co.-Sebast. Inl. Tx. Dist. Aerial Photographic Surv. of Nearshore Waters of Indian River Co. An ArcInfo database of the nearshore benthic habitat off Indian River County and a small region of southern Brevard County mapped by FMRI staff performing stereo photo interpretation on 1:7,200 scale natural color aerial photography by Aero Map U.S., Inc., Ormond Beach, Florida, taken July 1994.
SC01 = Shore Protect. Proj. Side Scan Sonar Surv., Martin Co., Florida, Surv. No. 93-206, June 1993. A 1993 nearshore side-scan sonar and hydrographic survey conducted for beach nourishment in the northern half of Martin County (Sea Systems Corporation, 1993) provided areal data. The data, which show evidence of extensive hardbottom, were originally received from the USACOE as a CAD file and converted to ArcInfo.

This Unified Florida Reef Tract Map integrates the spatial geometry and classification schemes of various different benthic mapping efforts along the Florida Keys Reef Tract, Florida Bay and Gulf of Mexico coastal waters along the Florida Keys. This map employs a tiered Reclassification system which progressively aggregates classes into coarser thematic units until reaching a lowest common denominator classification which provides a common and consistent picture of the entire area. This approach provides common class values for different levels of detail allowing for flexibility in the scope of analysis. Existing benthic mapping classification values are cross-walked to CMECS classes. A CMECS descriptor field has been added to preserve classification details not available in CMECS. Reclassifications (Reclass Levels) are necessary because existing CMECS Levels to not consistently aggregate benthic classification values. Reclass Level 0 accommodates the lowest common denominator classification level to provide a consistent overview layer. Reclass Level 4 retains full thematic resolution while normalizing synonymous class values.
Sources used for this compilation include: Benthic Habitats Broward County Florida 2004 (Compiled as "benthic_SEFL_2013_poly" by NCRI) Benthic Habitats of Florida Keys Derived From IKONOS satellite imagery Benthic Habitats Florida Bay 2004 (Unioned with "Benthic Habitats South Florida" as "FWC Florida Bay") Benthic Habitats Marquesas-Quicksands Florida 2006 Benthic Habitats North Miami-Dade Florida 2009 (Compiled as "benthic_SEFL_2013_poly" by NCRI) Benthic Habitats Offshore Palm Beach County Florida 2002 (Compiled as "benthic_SEFL_2013_poly" by NCRI) Benthic Habitats Dry Tortugas Florida 2010 Benthic Habitats Biscayne Bay 2005 (Compiled as "Biscayne_NPS") Benthic Habitat East Biscayne National Park Florida 2008 (Compiled as "Biscayne_NPS") Benthic Habitats South Florida (Unioned with "Benthic Habitats Florida Bay 2004" as "FWC Florida Bay")
The data were reclassified as follows in the statewide coral hardbottom compilation:
All polygons with ClassLv 0 were included with the exception of those with a ClassLv4 of "Wormrock". (Worm reefs are maintained as a separate compilation)
Polygons with ClassLv1 of "Aggregate Reef" or "Individual or Aggregated Patch Reef" were classified as "Coral Reef".
Polygons with a ClassLv1 of "Pavement", "Reef Rubble", or "Ridge" were classified as "Hardbottom".
If a polygon classified as "Hardbottom" also contained Seagrass in the ClassLv4 attribute then it was classified as "Hardbottom with Seagrass".

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
FWRI staff added four attributes to each data set: SOURCEDATE - year(s) of source photography. METADATA - the information in this field will be populated with a link to the metadata for the source data set that the polygon came from once the source metadata is online. Currently it is the source data set name that can be used to reference the source metadata. DESCRIPT - is the description of the polygon type as reclassified from the source data attributes (see Source Contributions).
Staff used the most recent information for an area. Staff determined the most recent information by creating footprints of all source polygons, minus any large land polygons and uninterpreted areas. Staff used these footprints with the ArcGIS Toolbox 9.3 command "erase" to eliminate areas of overlap from older source data sets.
In some areas the erase function resulted in sliver polygons due to different studies using different shorelines or study boundaries. Staff manually deleted these slivers after the "erase". Once all the data were "erased" in preparation, staff "merged" all of the data into a single geodatabase feature class.
Running a topology resulted in 14 overlaps, which were present in the SEAMAP source data. These overlaps were only slivers and were corrected in this compilation.
If an area was uninterpreted within a more recent study, but interpreted in an older study, then the older study was used.
Sliver polygons are present and are due to preserving the "Source" attribute, due to different mapped areas for overlapping studies, or they were present in the original source data sets.

Process_Description:
The extent of the Unified Florida Reef Tract Map was added to the compilation. After reclassifying the data to "hardbottom", "hardbottom with seagrass" and "coral reef" types, the full data set was dissolved by DESCRIPT, SOURCEDATE, and METADATA. This helped with removing some sliver polygons, but others are still present. There were also some sliver gaps in source data sets.
