Abstract:

This GIS data set was created to assist in visually identifying the Kennedy Space Center Security Zone. The Captain of the Port Jacksonville Florida has established the security zones described in Title 33 Code of Federal Regulations Part 165.701 surrounding the Space Shuttle Complex at the Kennedy Space Center. The zone will be activated at 0500 01 October 2001 and will be enforced until 31 October 2001 or until cancelled by the Captain of the Port Jacksonville, FL. This zone includes both offshore and inland areas around Cape Canaveral and Merritt Island. No person or vessel may enter, pass through or remain within the security zone unless authorized by the Captain of the Port Jacksonville. Mariners are required to contact Coast Guard via channel 16 to arrange for this authorization. Failure to comply with this security zone will subject persons to a civil penalty of up to $27,500. Willful violation of this order may be punishable by a fine of not more than $50,000 or imprisonment for not more than five years or both. Mariners can contact the U.S. coast Guard via VHF CH 16 if there are any concerns regarding this security zone.
This data set also includes additional areas where motors are prohibited, such as from manatee protection legislation as of the creation date of this data set in Spring of 2004. This data set represents multiple areas of regulations using overlapping polygons.

Purpose:

This data set was created to assist in visually identifying the Kennedy Space Center Security Zone. This data set consists of polygons representing Federal Security Zones around the Cape Canaveral, Port Canaveral and Merritt Island area known as the Kennedy Space Center Security Zone. Boundaries were heads-up digitized from NOAA Nautical Charts and various legal descriptions of the zones.

Supplemental_Information:

Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.
