Abstract:

This data set represents undersea feature names. There are approximately 4800 undersea features with names approved by the United States Board on Geographic Names (BGN) currently in the Geographic Names Data Base (GNDB) and made available via the GEOnet Names Server (GNS). There are a total of approximately 8900 names in the database including variant (cross-reference) names and features for which there is no BGN-approved name. The BGN approves undersea feature names based on the recommendation of the Advisory Committee on Undersea Features (ACUF). ACUF is charged with recommending BGN policy for totally-submerged undersea features which lie outside the territorial sea (as recognized by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) of all coastal states. Undersea features within the territorial sea of the United States are handled by the BGN Domestic Names Committee (DNC) in coordination with ACUF.

Purpose: This GIS data set represents feature names for reference.

Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.There are more feature points available from the source - this data set wasoriginally global and not all points fit within the extent of the existing SDE feature dataset.

These data were downloaded from the GEOnet Names Server (GNS) Web site:<http://earth-info.nga.mil/gns/html/namefiles.htm> FWRI staff reprojected the data to Albers NAD 83 and loaded to ArcSDE. Some data points are deleted because they were beyond the extent of FWRI's existing feature dataset structure. Complete data can be obtained from the link above.

A form of the full name that allows for alphabetical sorting of the file into gazetteer sequence. All character/diacritic combinations and special characters are substituted with QWERTY (visible U.S. English keyboard) characters, all characters are upper-cased, numerals are converted to lower-case characters (0-9 = a-j), spaces are stripped out, and commas replaced with space. The substitution is done according to a character mapping table that is Region Font Code specific (see Character Set Conversion Table [Char_Sets_20060703.pdf]. This field is included for the benefit of the end user of the data to aid in the sorting of names if required.
