Title: WR_MMR_Manatee_Synoptic Surveys_Flightpath
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data
Description:
Abstract:
Database contains flight routes for the 2010 Synoptic Survey. Manatee synoptic surveys are used to obtain minimum counts of Florida manatees statewide. These surveys are conducted over 1 to 3 days in winter aerial surveys of manatees that cover all of the manatee's wintering habitats in Florida and Southeast Georgia. Surveys can be conducted up to 3 times per winter, after cold fronts pass through Florida (December - March). When it is coldest, manatees aggregate at natural warm springs and thermal discharges from power and industrial plants.
Purpose: To obtain a general (minimum) count of manatees statewide.

Each survey team was supplied with a theoretical flight route as a guideline. The observers were responsible for recording the aircrafts actual flight route using a GPS. The flight routes were downloaded as a digital polyline.
Logical_Consistency_Report: QAQC complete
Completeness_Report:
The flight routes for Broward, Charlotte, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach Counties and Blue Springs and Warm Mineral Springs were not recorded and are omitted from this .shp file. The included flight routes include unsurveyed segments from take-off to the beginning of the survey and from the end of the survey to landing.

Process_Description:
Each survey team supplied a map packet of their county/region. The maps provided contain the estimated flight paths that where hand drawn while in route. An observer in the aircraft was responsible for charting the aircrafts course and recording manatee sightings. Using ArcMap, heads up digitizing was used to transfer the hand drawn flight paths to a digital polyline. For QAQC, printed versions of the digitized flight paths where distributed back to the individuals responsible for drawing the original path. Corrections where made on these maps and then returned for digital updating/editing. A second edited edition of the maps was redistributed for final approval. Some additional edits where made at this time and then given the final approval by each surveying team.
