Abstract:
This database encompasses data collected during alligator nest surveys by FWC employees. Information includes observer, pilot, the alligator management unit surveyed, nest locations, and nest type classification (good, flooded, false, depredated). This information is used in the establishment of egg collection quotas and to monitor nest production in these areas. Spatial GIS information is also derived from this dataset for maps and analyses.
Purpose:
The purpose of this data is to establish egg collection quotas and to monitor nest production in these areas. This spatial GIS information is derived from the master database and can be used for maps, spatial analyses, and to set egg collection quotas.
Supplemental_Information:
This shapefile was created by compiling data that were derived in multiple ways. 2001 - 2005 data was downloaded from the master nest database on Feb 16, 2006, Spatial data from 2003 to 2005 in this database were collected using either a tablet pc or a pda and an attached GPS unit using ArcPad 6. The status of each nest (good, flooded, depredated, false, or research) was recorded at the same time the location was digitally recorded. Data was then uploaded to a master database. Data from 2001-2002 and 2006-2010 were taken from Garmin GPS points collected during helicopter surveys. However, at this particular time, the status of each nest is unknown. Status information from 2001 and 2002 are in hardcopy form (paper) and will be evaluated as to whether to be incorporated into this database. Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.--

Attribute accuracy is 'very good'. Data entry errors have been minimized because the data is taken on a PC tablet in the field, checked for errors, then directly uploaded to the online database. At this time, the data is checked for any information outside of the defined fields, and for any duplicate information.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
A query is run to eliminate duplicate entries at the time of uploading into the online database. The data is collected in a form that assures adherence to standard alligator management unit names. The quotas are derived from the detailed nest summary information, and are reviewed by Alligator staff prior to distribution.

MS Access database that contains American alligator nest data from June and July of each year. Alligator Management Unit (AMU_UNIT), Observer, Helicopter Pilot, Date, Time, Nest Status (Good, Flooded, Depredated, False, Research), Latitude and Longitude (decimal degrees), and Survey Time are recorded through an automated ArcPad Program (written by Mark Endries) for 2003-2005. Nests with no details can also be entered. These are often nests that are counted and their status is classified, coordinates were generated through ArcGIS. This information is used to determine egg collection quotas for each area, which are also recorded in the database in the Nest Summary.
