Description:

Abstract:: This shapefile contains the locations of calls from the public regarding specific human-black bear (Ursus americanus floridanus) interactions in the state of Florida. The data were limited to those records obtained from the Wildlife Incident Management System (WIMS) database maintained by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and that were associated with a geographic coordinate.
Purpose:: These data are available for all people interested in the locations of human-black bear interactions in the state of Florida.
Supplemental_Information:: Acknowledgement of the FWC-HSC (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission-Habitat and Species Conservation Division) as the data source would be appreciated in any products developed from these data, and such acknowledgment as is standard for citation and legal practices for data source is expected by users of this data. Please cite the original metadata when using portions of the record to create a similar record of slightly altered data, such as reprojection. If any data are modified or adjusted, please share the edited information with FWC. Users should be aware that comparison with other data sets for the same area from other time periods may be inaccurate due to inconsistencies resulting from changes in mapping conventions, data collection, and computer processes over time. FWC shall not be liable for improper or incorrect use of this data. These data are not legal documents and are not to be used as such. This is not a survey data set and should not be utilized as such. These data are not to be used for navigation.

Dataset describing Florida black bear activity in the state of Florida.

Process_Step:

Process_Description:: Staff records call locations in the WIMS database as street addresses or locations on map for each record, when available. WIMS automatically provides the geographic coordinates for the call locations, which were then exported into Microsoft Excel as a spreadsheet. Spreadsheet data were imported into ESRI ArcMap 10.3.1 as an XY event and converted into a point shapefile. Records from spreadsheet prior to 2016 without geographic coordinates were geocoded against the NAVTEQ 2013 address locator. Geocoded records with an 85% match or better were retained. In an event of a tie, the first match was retained. The shapefile was QA/QC'd against county boundaries layer in data library. Questionable records were individually examined and corrected as appropriate.
