Description:

Abstract:: This dataset represents the results of data collected during brown pelican surveys conducted by the FWC from 1968 - 2012. During the surveys, observations were documented at known colony locations throughout Florida. The data includes pelican colony locations and the number of observations for each colony for every year a survey was conducted.
Purpose:: To display the locations of brown pelican colonies in Florida and to provide observational data.
Supplemental_Information:: Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.

Process_Step:

Process_Description:: An Excel spreadsheet containing brown pelican colony locations and observation data was inspected and edited as necessary to insure consistency and proper formatting for conversion to a spatial database. The spreadsheet was then imported into ArcMap and XY coordinates were displayed on a map of Florida. After confirming logical spatial locations, the data were exported to a geodatabase as a feature class. All attributes and spatial integrity of the data were inspecting according to FWRI procedures to insure accuracy and logical consistency.
