Abstract:

Since 2000, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection has encouraged clean boating through the development of the following designation Florida Clean Marina, Florida Clean Boatyard, Florida Clean Marine Retailer, & Florida Clean Boater Programs which recognize facilities engaging in environmentally friendly practices, beyond regulatory requirements, in and around Floridas waterways. The programs are voluntary designation programs with a proactive approach to environmental stewardship.

Purpose:

To provide the locations of the participants of the Florida Clean Marina, Florida Clean Boatyard, Florida Clean Marine Retailer, & Florida Clean Boater Programs.

These data were originally acquired from Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) and then converted to geospatial data by FWC: FWRI staff. For the most up-to-date Participant list, please contact the Clean Marina Program at the FDEP.
Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.

Process_Description:

The source data, provided to FWC by FDEP as an excel spreadsheet, was imported into GoogleRefine for examination of consistency within fields. Facility names were standardized, often times just by removing an extra space in the name, all Project Types that were listed as some sort of "pumpout" was simlified to be "Pumpout," and the latitude and longitude of select faciities that appeared to be outliers were searched using GoogleEarth according to the facility address to correct the location. The corrected excel sheet was imported into an ArcMap session, displayed according to the X,Y (Longitude, Latitude) position and then reprojected into NAD_1983_Albers projection. Finally, the output feature class wass inspected for accuracy.

The source data where 'ProjectTyp' = "Clean Marina" were reviewed by FWC:FWRI for point location consistency. The correct location information was searched using FL DEP's online list of Clean Marinas, the Facility's web site, and Google Maps to confirm location. The point for erroneous location data was moved and the LAT and LONG fields were recalculated using the "Calculate Geometry" tool in ArcMap.
