Abstract:

This dataset was created from spatial data downloaded from the USFWS Environmental Conservation Online System and NOAA Fisheries GIS data web page (updated March 1, 2019). The data included all critical wildlife habitat areas that intersect the states of Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Louisiana, and Texas as well as areas in the Carribean, which include Puerto Rico and the U. S. The Virgin Islands. The data represent critical wildlife habitat areas as designated by the NOAA Fisheries Southeast Region (formerly the National Marine Fisheries Service or NMFS) for species listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act of 1973.

Purpose:

To cartographically represent areas that are essential to the conservation of threatened and endangered species.

Supplemental_Information:

Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.

Critical habitat shapefiles were downloaded from two sources: USFWS ECOS online system, and the NOAA Fisheries GIS download site for the Southeast region. For the USFWS habitat data, both an aggregate shapefile containing all critical habitat features for all species as well as a file containing individual shapefiles for each species were downloaded. The shapefiles were unzipped into individual folders and evaluated using ArcCatalog. Since the shapefiles contained inconsistencies regarding schema and projections, some processing was necessary before compiling the data into a single dataset. First, a new geodatabase was created with a new feature dataset.
Staff then selected for those portions of the USFWS aggregate dataset that intersected the boundaries of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. From this selection, staff determined which individual species shapefiles to include in the final dataset. The individual USFWS shapefiles were used because more detailed attribute information was often included than in the aggregate file. If a species did not have an individual shapefile, staff searched for and exported the necessary features for that species from the aggregate USFWS shapefile. Since the USFWS aggregate dataset often did not include species from NOAA Fisheries, all of the downloaded NOAA Fisheries critical habitat data was included in the final dataset. Where a dataset was available from both USFWS and NOAA Fisheries for a species, the more detailed NOAA data replaced the USFWS data in the final dataset.
All of the selected shapefiles were then imported into the feature dataset. This import also re-projected each dataset into the FGDL Florida Albers projection. Schema inconsistencies between these datasets were then addressed as needed by adding attributes such as scientific name, federal register number, publication date of ruling, species code, and listing status, among others; please see the attribute descriptions for more information. These fields were also populated with the field calculator if the necessary data was available in the USFWS aggregate file, the individual shapefile metadata, the online ECOS species profile, and/or the online federal register documents. The final dataset was then created by merging all the updated feature classes.
