Abstract:
Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) protects 2,900 square nautical miles of waters surrounding the Florida Keys. The FKNMS created five different types of zones with varying levels of protection. A Wildlife Management Area or WMA is a type of zone intended to minimize disturbance to sensitive or endangered wildlife and their habitats, such as bird nesting, resting or feeding areas, and turtle nesting beaches. Regulations governing WMAs are designed to provide opportunities for public use while protecting wildlife. There are currently 27 WMAs in the sanctuary. Twenty of these areas are co-managed with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as part of their plan for managing backcountry portions of the national wildlife refuges in the Florida Keys. The remaining seven WMAs are under sanctuary management. Public-access restrictions in WMAs include idle speed only/no wake, no access buffer, no motor, and limited closures, and are marked as such on white and orange information/regulatory cylindrical spar buoys. The legal boundaries of the WMAs are defined within the Code of Federal Regulations, at 15 C.F.R. Part 922, Subpart P, Appendix III. The GIS compatible digital boundary files for each WMA are representations of those legal boundaries and are based on the best available data.
Purpose:
These GIS compatible digital files are provided to promote an understanding of the boundaries of each Wildlife Management Area. They are based on the legal definition of each WMA as defined in the Code of Federal Regulations, at 15 C.F.R. Part 922, Subpart P, Appendix III. These digital files are not intended and should not be relied upon for use in navigation or legal purposes.
