Abstract:: This GIS data set represents the Marine Fisheries Trip Ticket Fishing Area Codes.
Purpose:: To represents the Marine Fisheries Trip Ticket Fishing Area Codes in GIS format.
Supplemental_Information:: Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.
This data set reflects the fishing area codes currently used in Florida. The code 744.2 was the original code for all of Biscayne Bay waters combined; however, it is no longer used and is not included in this data set. The more detailed area designations 744.3 (Biscayne Bay outside of National Park) and 744.4 (Biscayne Bay inside National Park) replace the old 744.2 code. Historical data may still use code 744.2.

Process_Description:

The state and federal waters polygon data was used for the data. A polygon representing the land area was added using ArcMap 10.1 and it was merged into the state waters area to create a state bounds polygon. The polygons were converted to lines using XTools Pro for ArcMap 10.1 Convert Polygons to Polylines.
An older shapefile with the base fishing areas grid was used to get the main fish areas (at the whole number level). The polygons were converted to lines using XTools Pro for ArcMap 10.1 Convert Polygons to Polylines. The lines were overlaid on the state and federal bounds lines and extended until they met. Polygons were then created from these lines using XTools Pro Make Polygons from Polylines.
The most recent 1:12,000 scale Florida shoreline (including updates from the South Florida ESI 2013 and Panhandle ESI 2012) was used to ERASE from the polygon area, leaving only water. Some sliver polygons were manually cleaned up.
Centroids were created from the older fishareas shapefile and used to initally populate the attributes using a spatial join. Additional detailed linework was digitized using FWC Imagery and Marine Fisheries Trip Ticket Area Code Map poster as references.
A topology was run to ensure no overlapping polygons were present. The attributes were reviewed using ArcGIS FREQUENCY command. Any inconsistent attributes were corrected.
The data were dissolved on attributes to create a single multipart feature for each designated area code.
