Abstract:
This spatial dataset contains 177,100 historical point locations of Florida amphibians and reptiles from as early as 1832 to 2011. Of the total number of locations, 137,353 were vouchered records (specimens or photographs) from 58 museums or institutions across the nation. We supplemented these records with 39,746 unvouchered or unverified records from the scientific and popular literature, reports, and credible survey databases. Whenever possible, questionable vouchers were examined by the authors or by staff of the institutions where the specimens were housed, and corrections were made when needed. Unverified records could not be examined, and we excluded unverified records considered to be of unlikely validity. We georeferenced all records and then used these data to generate distributional maps for the 142 native and 56 non-native species of amphibians and reptiles known to occur in Florida. Specimen collection, recording, and preservation methodology varied among museums and institutions that housed the collections. Visual examination of available specimens and photographs confirmed correct identification for vouchered records. All records were quality-checked. Wherever feasible, records were assigned a coordinate location; this was not always possible.

Unverified. Locations were georeferenced as accurately as possible, but some records, particularly old ones, provided only the name of a city/town or county. Coordinate precision (meters) was only estimate for vouchered turtle records. For unvouchered records, if locality information were not provided in publications or reports, we tried to obtain the information from the author(s). The datum stayed consistent among all records.

Records were collected from a variety of sources. There are 34 HerpNet institutions as well as 23 non-HerpNet institutions that contain Florida specimens, which we georeferenced and used for this study. Contributing institutions are listed in Table 2 of the final report (see cited report in Cross Reference section). Over 1,000 literature citations from FWC’s online Herp Bibliography of Florida were examined for pertinent information. Additional unverified records were obtained from FWC databases that summarized the results of drift-fence surveys and dipnet surveys for larval amphibians. We did not include survey data collected by persons with questionable species identification skills. Unverified or unvouchered records were also obtained from FNAI’s Element Occurrence Records database, FWC’s Wildlife Observation (Wildobs) database, FWC’s Exotic Species database, FWC’s Sea Turtle Nesting database, and FWC’s Sea Turtle Salvage and Stranding Network database.

Locality data were georeferenced using: ArcGIS x.x, BioGeomancer, Google Earth, DeLorme Topo USA, hanheld GPS units, Land Boundary Information System [Labins], etc. The unvouchered and vouchered records were formatted and combined into a Microsoft Access 2007 database. Three additional fields (Common Name, Species, and Voucher) were added for better record identification).

We exported a table containing all records from the Access database into an Microsoft Excel 2007 dataset. Then we converted the Excel dataset to a point shapefile in ArcGIS (ver. 10.0) using the assigned coordinates. We removed 117 records from the attribute table that were not assigned coordinates. The removed records were retained in the accompanying Microsoft Excel file. Both the shapefile and the Excel dataset were placed in an ArcGIS file geodatabase (Herp_Atlas_2011.gdb).
