- Abstract:
-
This spatial dataset shows the survey site locations for marsh birds observed in Florida, January 2010-June 2012. These spatial data can be joined with a table of habitat metrics (MarshBirdsHabitat_2012.xlsx) recorded in the vicinity of each survey site with the field 'CountPoint'. Few quantitative trend data exist for avian species dependent upon coastal and freshwater habitats in Florida. As a result, several Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) programs have independently identified a high priority need for studies on the current range and population trends for marsh birds. Collectively, these birds tend to be small, secretive species, whose presence is most often detected by their calls. In this study, we focused on surveying the following 7 marsh bird species: least bittern (Ixobrychus exilis), black rail (Laterallus jamaicensis), clapper rail (Rallus longirostris), king rail (Rallus elegans), common moorhen (Gallinule chloropus), purple gallinule (Porphyrula martinica), and limpkin (Aramus guarauna)
- Purpose:
-
This study will help establish future objectives for marsh bird occurrence and abundance, and they will facilitate assessing trends in marsh bird habitat quality and quantity. Results will enable the FWC to collaborate with land managers of other state and federal agencies to devise strategies for managing marsh habitat and associated avian species in Florida.
- Supplemental_Information:
-
As part of a North American Breeding Marshbird Monitoring Program, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is seeking cooperating state agencies to participate in a nationwide marsh bird survey effort. As a result, the FWC-Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) received funding from the USFWS. This will be a cooperative project involving staff from the FWC, biologists from other state and federal agencies, and volunteers. This study is described using the following terms: 1) point count refers to the method of surveying, 2) count point refers to the individual survey locations, 3) station point refers to the center of the count point, 4) site refers to the contiguous tract of marsh habitat containing the count points (Site and patch are used interchangeably only when discussing the size of the study site and area sensitivity of avian species), and 5) cluster refers to a group of 6 count points per site. Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.

While marsh birds tend to be secretive and rarely sighted, surveys in open, marsh habitats should be more effective in detecting species when calling. We used an unlimited-radius point count with a minimum of 500 m between the centers of each count point. We then used DISTANCE software to compensate for differences in species detectability. We conducted 3 repeated surveys at each of 6 count points for each site using standard methodologies.

The survey extent covers the entire state of Florida, but survey sites were randomly located in both freshwater and marine-estuarine wetlands. We selected six count points within each wetland, distanced a minimum of 500 m apart. On the ground inspection, each SSU and count points was completed prior to the survey to determine suitability for detecting marsh birds. Each count point was located via a WAAS enabled GPS unit so observers can revisit the same location on subsequent occasions.

1. Six count points were placed within each wetland, distanced a minimum of 500 m apart, for a total of 248 stations. For field definitions, refer to cross-referenced document. Start of the survey period consisted of a 5-minute passive listening period, divided into 5, 1-minute increments, followed by a call-broadcast period. Then we played broadcasts of recorded calls (call-broadcast, tape-playback or acoustic-lure survey method) of focal or targeted species (listed above) to elicit responses. The recorded call of one focal species was played for 30 seconds followed by 30 seconds of silence before broadcasting the call of the next species. Since 7 focal species of birds were surveyed, surveys were 12 minutes in duration for each count point. We measured the distance to each observed bird using a laser rangefinder with an accuracy of ±1 m. We visited each count point of 6 count points for each site on 3 occasions, with 7-10 days separating each replicate, to improve the detection rate of species and to be able to estimate the mean variance for several avian variables.

2. To control for environmental conditions, we recorded variation in background noise (e.g., wind and traffic), habitat (dense habitat decreased the distance a call will be detected), species of bird (loud and closer calls will be more often detected), observer(s), and observer ability to detect bird calls. Then we conducted the survey, recording the date, count point number, site name/code, and latitude/longitude will be recorded for each point station. Surveys will be conducted during March 1 to June 15 and each count point will be surveyed with a minimum interval of 1 week to account for any north-south differences in breeding activity across the state.

3. In order to evaluate the quality of the study sites and associated occurrence by avian species, we characterized each count point with several descriptive habitat variables recorded in the joinable attribute table.

4. To create a spatial database, a GIS analyst standardized the survey database in accordance with Project Leader. The received marsh bird survey data were in MS Excel (.xlsm) format. 1) Place each table on a separate worksheet (tab) within the workbook (database) and then import each tab as a table into a single MS Access database. SURVEY COLLECTION DATA: 2) Remove the following fields from the Counts table as per Principle Investigator: Individ Code, Mate Code, CallType 3-5, OtherCallType fields. 3) In the Counts table, replace all blank cells with '0' except in: CallType1-2, Direction, Temp, DistanceM, DistEstAid, InTargetAr, and 'Comments. For the DistEstAid field, Find/Replace all blank cells to 5. Filter and delete records where NumDect does not = '0'/ all survey cells (Pass1-SESP) = '0'/ outside = '0'. 4) In the FindDistance table, add a row where DistCode=’5’ and DistAid=’-‘. 5) Create query 'A' (qryCountData) joining Counts table with look-up tables Alpha Code and Find Distance, adding CommName:AlfaCode and DistAid:FindDistance to Counts table. 6) Create query ‘B’ (qryLookupSplit) joining LocationInfo with Surveys table (with Sky, Wind, and Noise tables) by Station/StationNum. 7) Query 'B' should contain the following fields (Table in parentheses): CountPoint (Surveys), Tract:pointDescription (LocationInfo), Route: MarshbirdRoute (LocationInfo), Latitude (LocationInfo), Longitude (LocationInfo), Station (Surveys), SurveyNo (Surveys), Date (Surveys), and Time (Surveys). 9) Create query ‘C’ (qry2012MarshBirdSurvey) joining queries ‘A’ and ‘B’ by Station/Site. Remove ID field. 11) Export to MS Excel table with tag '_ALL'.. Remove records in Excel table that don’t have spatial coordinates. Change field name 'Station' to 'CountPoint'. SaveAs with '_ALL' removed. 12) In ArcCatalog, convert Excel table to a shapefile with geographic coordinates in WGS84. 13) Reproject to Florida Modified Albers NAD83 HARN. HABITAT METRICS AT SURVEY POINTS: 12) Remove ID field and remove 1 record from each station that was surveyed twice, as recommended by project leader; either record can be removed so chose to remove records with the higher ID number. 13) Export table to Excel table to be placed in same folder as marsh bird survey shapefile; Rename 'Point' as 'CountPoint'. 14) The habitat table and survey tables can be joined by CountPoint fields.
