Abstract:

This project is an attempt to develop a feasible monitoring method for Round tailed muskrats (RTMs) that will allow land managers to quickly confirm presence of RTMs on their areas, and to also contribute information on the ecological needs of this poorly known species. A complete database of this project can be obtained upon request from FWC-FWRI.

Purpose:

GIS point data depicting muskrat pilot survey locations. Details of individual surveys provided.

Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. All entities and attributes have been identified. A comparison between the original data points with 1:20,000 imagery and the survey site descriptions was performed. A discrepancy was found with one site record, Wetland ID Dup004, in which the coordinates in the original data did not match the imagery or the site description. The spatial component of this record was corrected based on the information provided by Melissa Tucker - FWC - Division of Habitat and Species Conservation.

These data appear logically consistent. Topology of spatial data was compared to available aerial photography of the study areas.

Completeness_Report:

These data appear to be complete as of information avilable to FWRI in May, 2013. Data was mapped based on provided coordinates. With the exception of one study area (Wetland ID Dup004) from the original dataset, all points appear logical and consistent with the site description provided (See Accuracy Report). Study area Wetland ID Dup004 location was adjusted manually. The spatial extent of this dataset ranges from South to North-Central Florida.

Process_Description:

Surveys for round-tailed muskrat lodges were conducted between between 4 Dec 2008 - 27 Feb 2009. Surveys were perfomed based on the 30-minute survey protocol of Schooley and Branch (2005) with the exception that 60-minute surveys were conducted in the larger wetlands if no muskrat lodge was found in the initial 30-minute search. Observers were to begin the search of an isolated wetland in the best potential muskrat habitat and search in a systematic transect through the wetland. A complete survey of the entire wetland WAS NOT needed using this method. The survey ends when the first lodge is found and the time is noted. Survey data was uploaded to MSAcess database.

Staff created a point shapefile based on tbl_WetlandLocation extracted from project MS Access database. Staff created a point shapefile based on tbl_MuskratSurvey table joined with tbl_WetlandLocation geographic fields 'UTM_East', 'UTM_North', and 'UTMZone'. Join was preformed based on shared 'WetlandID' field. Both tables were extracted from project MSAccess database. Data was originally projected in 'WGS 1984 UTM Zone 17N' and then transformed into 'FDEP Albers HARN' using 'WGS_1984(ITRF00)_To_NAD_1983_HARN' transformation. ArcGIS10 - arcpy.Project_management()
