Description:

Abstract:

The Panama City crayfish (Procambarus econfinae; PCC) is a small freshwater crustacean found only in a small portion of Bay County, in northwest Florida. The historical habitat of the PCC is believed to have been wet pine flatwoods, but most current populations exist in human-altered settings such as planted pine plantations, roadside ditches, and utility rights-of-way. The major threats to the species include habitat loss and degradation, habitat fragmentation and subpopulation isolation, and direct mortality due to human activities.

Purpose:

To document survey efforts for the Panama City crayfish (Procambarus econfinae; PCC) in Bay County, Florida.

Supplemental_Information: This dataset includes both presence and absence records.

FWC biological staff continually performed field surveys that recorded the field information. At a later point these data were entered into an excel spreadsheet.

The FWRI Center for Spatial Analysis completed the following steps: 1) standardized the data within the excel spreadsheet (e.g. standardized spacing in otherwise identical "Surveyors" entries, standardized the Number of Individuals entries "<10", " < 10", and "< 10" to all be "< 10", standardized the Survey Time entries " 10+" and "10+" to be "10+", etc.) 2) imported the excel spreadsheet into Microsoft Access (.mdb file), abbreviated the field names to be compatible and meaningful when converted to a shapefile, formatted field types to appropriately recieve data from excel (e.g. confirm a text field for number fields with special characters [e.g. "10+"] and a text field for number fields with <Null> values to avoid auto population with "0" value in shapefile. 3) imported the .mdb table into a .gdb twice (once for shp file final output and 2nd time for a feature class final output ) with different field types. 4) imported the tables into ArcMap, displayed XY data, exported XY data to shapefile and feature class. 5) completed Quality Assurance / Quality Control check on the data

The existing shapefile was appended with survey locations and attribute information that reflect the most current data from the spreadsheet update.
