- Title: Sandhill Bird Surveys in Florida 2008
- Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data
- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
This spatial dataset represents the survey site locations and survey results of multiple bird species in sandhill habitat throughout Florida. The evaluated status of sandhill habitat in Florida is poor and declining but there is little quantitative information on the status and trend of avian species dependent upon this habitat.
- Purpose:
-
Determine baseline distribution and relative abundance of birds that are characteristic of the sandhill vegetative community in Florida.
- Supplemental_Information:
-
Florida Wildlife Legacy Initiative (FWLI) identified sandhills as a priority community. Data resulting from this study and subsequent, periodic monitoring will help to establish performance measures for the sandhill community and associated wildlife, and to assess impacts of trends in sandhill habitat quantity and quality.
Geo-referenced avian occurrence and abundance data will provide for identifying landscape features and vegetation characteristics that determine species occurrence. Such data, in conjunction with further analyses of GIS data, may also help predict species occurrence and abundance on private parcels that are not accessible for monitoring. Results will enable the FWC to collaborate with private landowners and other state and federal agencies to devise strategies for managing sandhill habitat and associated avian species in Florida.
This study also will support regional and statewide efforts to develop and implement FWC's long-term integrated Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy (CWCS) for monitoring, developing performance measures, and determining the success of FWC efforts to conserve Florida's avian diversity in sandhill habitats. The results of this project will allow FWC to model sandhill habitat management and develop protocols for other habitats and species. The program will make FWC a leader at the state and national level by setting objectives and performance measures for monitoring impacts to avian species and make conservation recommendations for avian communities. Because only about 55% of the identified sandhill habitat is in public ownership, a major goal of this study is to provide insight into the management of private lands for avian species. If this pilot project is successful, then we anticipate looking for additional sources of funding to continue this study.

We identified and then surveyed 57 sandhill longleaf pine parcels in Florida with the 2003 Florida Vegetation and Landcover Map. We selected parcels for surveying using a random design stratified by ownership and other parcel characteristics. Opportunities for partnering with landowners and other agencies in conjunction with FWLI biologists were also considered in parcel selection.
- Process_Step:
-
- Process_Description:
-
We surveyed 6 randomly located Count Points (point-count stations) within those parcels. The specific sampling protocol included 6 point counts for each of the 57 sites and 2-3 visits per Count Point to accommodate variability in total number of species per site.
- Process_Step:
-
- Process_Description:
-
We conducted each point-count survey according to the survey protocol developed by Knutson et al. (2007) recorded below, except that we altered our behavior categories to account for a wider variety of activity.
- Complete all surveys 0.5 hour before sunrise-4 hours after sunrise,
- Record temperature, weather, noise level, wind speed using Beaufort Scale,
- Locate each point station with Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) enabled Garmin-brand GPS units,
- Set minimum distance between stations will be 250 m,
- Conduct survey with two-person survey team: 1 recorder and 1 observer,
- 5-minute survey periods at each point station,
- Count all birds heard or seen within 75-m radius of center for each point station,
- Employ distance sampling method (distance to each observation recorded),
- Record the minute of each bird observation (both sighted and heard) with digital timer, and
- Use the following observation codes to record behavior: M=male visual sighting, F=female visual sighting, V=unknown sex visual sighting, J=juvenile visual sighting, B=breeding display, N=nesting). NOTE: These are the original behavior categories contained in Knutsen et al. (2007). See next process step for the categories used in this study.
- Process_Step:
-
- Process_Description:
-
We altered behavior categories from Knutsen et al. (2007) to record different behaviors/activities. Observers recorded birds 'observed' in place of birds 'sighted'. 'Observed' is a word that implies auditory and/or visual detection. Surveyors recorded behaviors using the behavior codes described in the list below. The GIS analyst later translated the behavior codes back into text for ease of database interpretation. Behavior codes were further altered by collapsing 'Call' and 'Song' categories into 'Vocalization', using the following singular codes in unique combinations (e.g., DCV= drum, vocalization, sex unknown).
C/S=vocalization (call and/or song),
D=drum,
F=female observed,
J=juvenile observed,
M=male observed,
N=nesting,
V=unknown sex observed, and
W=wing noise.
- Process_Step:
-
- Process_Description:
-
The GIS analyst imported the database into Access 2007, creating 6 tables:
- A table of latitude/longitude collected for each survey site,
- A table of habitat characteristics at the site,
- A table of data collected for the bird species observed from each survey site, and
- Three tables of the domain values: bird species, habitat type, and bird behavior, used to define symbols in first three tables.
- Fields were rearranged and names were abbreviated (ArcGIS has a maximum character length for field names)
- AL51-AL56, M91,SH71, SH76, SH885, and SS11 do not have coordinates.
- Process_Step:
-
- Process_Description:
-
Prior to creating a spatial database, the GIS analyst standardized the survey database in accordance with Project Leader. The analyst populated empty cells with the same ambient temperature, cloud cover, wind speed, precipitation, observer, and site comment values recorded within a single survey session. In the distance field, the analyst removed alphanumeric symbols (such as '+' and '>') from 21 cells, adding 1 to the recorded distances to indicate a value greater than the estimate. Then she identified and corrected errors discovered in database; confirmed and corrected by PI. She also corrected mislabeled species codes (e.g. SHCR instead of SACR for sandhill crane) or those that are not on codelist (e.g. YTVI, or yellow-throated vireo).
- Process_Step:
-
- Process_Description:
-
The analyst created queries (e.g. joining coordinates, species code, and behavior code tables to SURVEY Data table, multiplying longitude by -1, with each field desired in attribute table. Then the queries were run/re-run until she reduced the process for making the final Survey data table down to one single Access query. The analyst processed the Habitats table in a similar manner. Finally, both final tables were exported into Microsoft Excel tables (.xlsx format) and converted SURVEY table to shapefile in the WGS84 geographic coordinate system, and then projected the spatial data into Florida Modified Albers HARN and imported metadata draft to embed with the feature data. The table containing HABITAT description data (SandhillBirdHabitat.xlsx) collected for each Count Point is joinable to the SURVEY shapefile (SandhillBirds_2008) by the attribute field, 'CountPoint'.
