This data set shows the locations where piping plovers, snowy plovers, wilson's plovers and red knots were observed in northwest Florida during January 2006 surveys

Purpose:

This observation data shows the general locations of the birds during the 2006 census.

Supplemental_Information:

To create this GIS layer, data was taken from the "2006 International Red Knot, Piping, Snowy and Wilson's Plover Winter Census: Individual Census Reports" that were submitted to the US FWS from individuals throughout the state.

Points were plotted by latitude and longitude of the location taken from the "Individual Census Reports". If no coordinates were given for the specific location of the birds, then the coordinates of the survey site were used to plot the point. If no coordinates were provided, the point was plotted using the accompanying field maps. All points were then verified for spatial accuracy within ArcView.

In each of Red Knot, Piping Plover, Snowy Plover, & Wilson's Plover datasets, a new field was created named "Count_" which was calculated from the number field with the species counts (RK, PIPL, SNPL, WIPL). A 2nd new field was created in each source file called "ComName" where the species common name was calculated into the field. Afterwards, the source files were MERGEd into one feature class.
