Abstract:

This spatial dataset represents point locations of striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) and spotted skunks (Spilogale spp.) in Florida, 1997-2002. This skunk study was initiated based on reports by biologists, conservation officers, and others working in Florida’s woods and swamps who said they had noted an apparent and significant decline in skunk sightings during the past decade.

Purpose:

To determine skunk population trends in Florida and to determine the cause of any population declines.

Supplemental_Information:

Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.

Extent of positional errors unknown. Dataset examined for presence of errors in the County field. There were 69 instances out of 2023 records (3.4%) where the recorded county did not match with the overlaid layer of Florida county boundaries. This discrepancy can either be caused by a recording error in the County field, or a recording error in the spatial coordinates; actual cause undetermined.

The FWC asked public residents to report any skunk sightings within the past five years; nearly 2,000 people responded by letter, telephone and e-mail. The FWC announced the study in all the state’s major daily newspapers, the Associated Press, Florida Public Radio, CBS Radio Network, and CNN.
The public reports were supplemented by a survey of more than 1,000 wildlife rehabilitators, trappers and biologists throughout the state. Respondents reported 193 positive skunk sightings, and 179 noted no sighting in the past five years.

All data tables were imported into MS Access. Removed unneeded fields, re-ordered fields, and created queries to form new fields. Edited obvious attribute errors and ensured searchable attribute fields were standardized. Converted dataset to point-feature data, assuning an NAD83 geographic coordinate system. Reprojected into Florida Modified Albers.
