Abstract:

Data are derived from a snail kite nest monitoring project by GFC/FWC staff beginning in 1987. Data are nest survival and productivity data (clutch size, hatching rate, fledging rate, survival to 2 weeks to fledging age, sources of nest failure) of individual nests. Coverage includes the everglades and major lakes/wetlands in south and central Florida.

Purpose:

Monitor the nesting distribution and productivity of snail kites in south and central Florida.

Supplemental_Information:

Most of the data from this study were published in 2 papers on nesting ecology (Rodgers 1998, Rodgers 2007).
Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.

Data locations were determined with LORAN and GPS equipment. Noticed in 2012 that 3 locations for 1987 were incorrect based on land cover (nests appeared in ag field, not waterbody). Judged to be originally recorded one dgree off. Fixed by changing LatDD coordinated for these 3 points from 26.xxxxx to 25.xxxxxx.

J. A. Rodgers, Jr. provided the snail kite attribute data. R.L. Telesco removed records of locations taken as benchmarks. Rodgers had assigned specific nest codes for the various artifical nests and artificial nest supports for the 'Nest Status' field. Telesco created a common Nest Status code, 'A' for the following codes: AN, AS, BN, and BS. Added a year field, and changed Waterbody field from 4-digit code to complete name. Combined degree and minute fields into single field with decimal degree format for Lat and Lon coordinate fields.
