Abstract:

This GIS data set represents all public and private air facilities in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Southern Region, including Puerto Rico. Facilities include airports, heliports, gliderports, seaplane base, stolport, and ultralight. The information used in this file was downloaded from the FAA and is current as of 1/15/2016.

Purpose:

This data set was created to display the locations of public and private air facilities in Florida for mapping purposes.

Supplemental_Information:

Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.

Process_Description:

The "Airport Data (5010) & Contact Information" data for the FAA Southern Region were extracted from the FAA Web site. The coordinates in the excel spreadsheet were given as degrees, minutes, seconds in a single field. FWRI staff converted these coordinates to decimal degrees and created a shapefile using ArcMap's "Add X,Y data" tool. The coordinates were assumed NAD83 datum, as no datum was given in the FAA information. The data were projected to Albers, and loaded into ArcSDE.
