Abstract:
This GIS data set contains "areas to be avoided" (ATBA) in the Florida Keys. Under the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and Protection Act, "Operating a tank vessel or a vessel greater than 50 meters in length is prohibited in all areas to be avoided, except if such vessel is a public vessel and its operation is essential for national defense, law enforcement, or responses to emergencies that threaten life, property, or the environment." These data were GENERATEd from coordinates in legal descriptions downloaded from the Federal Register. These data reflect the June 2001 amendment to the "areas to be avoided" boundaries.
Purpose: This data set is used for analyses and graphical purposes.
Supplemental_Information:
Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.

Please cite the original metadata when using portions of the record to create a similar record of slightly altered data, such as reprojection.
