Abstract:

These GIS data represent shallow banks within Florida Bay and the adjoining Florida Keys as depicted on NOAA Nautical Chart 11451. No NOAA bathymetric data are available for most of these polygons as the water was too shallow for traditional survey vessels.

Purpose:

These data were made digital to provide information on the locations of barriers to water circulation within Florida Bay. This need arose during studies of the seagrass die-off and phytoplankton blooms of the late 1980's through mid 1990's.

Supplemental_Information:

Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information. These data were digitized from paper chart in 1993. Although the original chart data were published in a 1980's version of Chart 11451, the varying source data can be historic, dating back to the 1800's. More recent data on the location of the shallow banks is now available from USGS.
