Abstract:
This GIS data set represents beaches in the state of Florida as selected from Florida's water management districts' land use land cover data including codes 1810 "Swimming Beaches" and 7100 "Beaches Other Than Swimming Beaches". In the Southwest Florida Water Management District - "Swimming Beaches" are not delineated separately from other recreational lands, so these features are not included in this beaches data set. Therefore, these data are intended to be used along side the FWC 2003 landcover "sand beach" data category for more complete beaches coverage.

Supplemental_Information:
Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.

Process_Description:
In general, polygons with a Florida Land Use, Cover And Forms Classification System code of 7100 or 1810 were selected from the land use data sets (where these codes were present.) The ERASE command was used to eliminate areas where source data sets overlapped (see source information for more details.) The resulting data sets were merged into one statewide data set. These data are intended to be used along side the FWC 2003 landcover "sand beach" data category for a more complete beaches coverage due to inconsistency in the mapping of the beach categories between the water management districts (see Completeness Report).
The data were loaded into FWRI's ArcSDE database.
