Abstract:

This shapefile contains the locations of black bear (Ursus americanus floridanus) mortalities, excluding road mortality, in the state of Florida. The data were limited to those records obtained from the Wildlife Incident Management System (WIMS) database maintained by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and that were associated with a geographic coordinate.

Purpose:

These data are available for all people interested in the location of black bear mortality other than road mortality in the state of Florida.

Supplemental_Information:

Acknowledgement of the FWC-HSC (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission-Habitat and Species Conservation Division) as the data source would be appreciated in any products developed from these data, and such acknowledgment as is standard for citation and legal practices for data source is expected by users of this data. Please cite the original metadata when using portions of the record to create a similar record of slightly altered data, such as reprojection. If any data are modified or adjusted, please share the edited information with FWC. Dataset describing Florida black bear activity in the state of Florida.

Process_Description:

Staff records mortality locations in the WIMS database as geographic coordinates, which were then exported into Microsoft Excel as a spreadsheet. Spreadsheet data were imported into ESRI ArcMap 10.3.1 as an XY event and converted into a point shapefile. The shapefile was QA/QC'd against county boundaries layer in data library. Questionable records were individually examined and corrected as appropriate.
