Abstract:

This GIS data set represents estuaries in the state of Florida.
This data set was created about 1998-1999. It is an intersection of the U.S. Geological Survey, Biological Resources Division's National Wetlands Research Center, Gulf Breeze Project Office's National Estuary data set and 'fl-wmd-bnd' coverage for the geographic extent of the state of Florida. The attribute data include 8-digit HUC basin codes, estuary names, water management district names, estuary size classification, and water management district sampling region codes. Attributes specific to the EMAP project, such as sampling year codes were added by FMRI.
The National Estuary data set was derived from modified Digital line graph (DLG). DLG data are digital representations of cartographic information. DLG's of map features are converted to digital form from maps and related sources. Intermediate-scale DLG data are derived from USGS 1:100,000-scale 30- by 60-minute quadrangle maps. If these maps are not available, Bureau of Land Management planimetric maps at a scale of 1:100,000 are used. The linework representing the boundary of estuary influence was copied from the DLG's and a closure line was added. The newly generated polygon was identified using NOAA Charts.
The 'fl-wmd-bnd' is an ArcInfo Coverage of Florida Water Management District Hydrologic Unit Codes (HUC) and subclasses was used to define geographic extent of sampling design.

Purpose: To visually represent estuaries of the state of Florida.

Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.
