Description:

Abstract:

A spatial representation of the Federal Waters between the Florida State Waters boundary and the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). The northern extent was defined by creating a line from the Florida/Georgia state waters boundary directly East until reaching the EEZ. The western extent was defined similarly by creating a line from the Florida/Alabama state waters boundary directly South to the EEZ. These Northern and Western extents are not based on any type of legal description; they have been created for the purpose of constructing a polygon of Federal waters near Florida. State Waters boundary data are from the MMS Submerged Lands Act, and the EEZ boundary is from NOAA. Please note that the source layers are different scales.

Supplemental_Information:

Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.

The maritime limits are created from normal baseline points. Points representing the baseline are referenced from the farthest seaward low-water mark as depicted on the largest scale, paper nautical charts. NOAA's raster nautical charts were used as backdrops in the CARIS map. As these charts were brought into the CARIS environment, the CARIS map was reprojected on the fly to match the chart's projection. The latest edition charts as referenced in the citation information section above contained baseline points that impacted the 200nm EEZ. The dates of these latest editions were current as of 2006.

Process_Description:

Florida State Waters polylines and EEZ polylines were merged into a single layer. A Northern and Western boundary was created based on the State boundaries and drawn East/West, North/South to represent Federal Waters in Florida. Parts of the EEZ beyond Florida were removed and the polylines were converted to a Polygon.
