- Description:

- Abstract:
-
This spatial dataset contains documented locations from gopher frog (Lithobates capito) observations in the State of Florida that are still likely to be extant. These records include historic and recent observations on public lands and recent (since 1990) observations on private lands that still have suitable habitat. Some dubious records were omitted because the area or observer’s identification skills were considered questionable. Some historic records were omitted because the habitat no longer appears to be suitable. Data were obtained from surveys (larval, calling, trapping), incidental observations, databases, and the literature.
- Purpose:
-
To generate distributional maps of the gopher frog in Florida. To identify distributional gaps or other locations where additional surveys may be needed.
- Supplemental_Information:
-
Historic records were gathered as a part of the Atlas of Amphibians and Reptiles in Florida project and additional records were added as a part of the Winter Breeding Amphibian Project and from other incidental observations. It should be noted that this dataset does not include all historic observations of the gopher frog in Florida as some historic observations have been removed because they either were questionable or no longer appeared to be located within suitable habitat. This dataset does not include any records on private lands before 1990, although these locations are included in the Atlas of Amphibians and Reptiles in Florida and can be provided upon request.
Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.

Records of gopher frogs observations from the Atlas of Amphibians and Reptiles in Florida project were combined with recent incidental observations and additional records from FWC’s Survey of Winter-Breeding Amphibian Species in the Peninsula Project and FWC’s Statewide Survey for the Striped Newt Project in an Excel 2007 Database. Historic observations and recent observations through 2011 were gathered as a part of the Atlas of Amphibians and Reptiles in Florida Project and georeferenced as described in Krysko et al. (2011). .

- Process_Description:
-
To generate a map of only extant populations, all records on private lands before 1990 were removed except in cases where suitable habitat was still known to occur on a property. Records where the observation was questionable either due to unsuitable habitat at the location or lack of skill of the observer were removed. Records were also removed that lacked sufficient geospatial information for mapping. We converted the Excel table containing all records to a point shapefile in ArcGIS (ver. 10.0) using the assigned coordinates. We removed 3 records from the attribute table that were not assigned coordinates
