Abstract:
This GIS data set represents Florida's West Coast Intracoastal Waterway and the Everglades Waterway. This coverage was created in 2001 by digitizing 1:40000 and 1:50000 scale NOAA Nautical Charts 11411, 11414, 11425, 11427, 11430, 11432, and 11433 in either paper or digital format. In cases where charts overlapped, the smallest-scale charts were used. Source chart dates range from 1989-1995.
Purpose:
To visually represent the Intracoastal Waterway of the West Coast of Florida.
Supplemental_Information:
Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.
The southern part of the layer, shown in the Everglades, is actually called the "Everglades National Park Wilderness Waterway", and this waterway is not a major thoroughfare like the traditional ICW. There are recommended vessel length (less than 18 feet) and height (no high cabins or windshields) restrictions noted on the NOAA Nautical Charts due to shallow waters, narrow channels, and overhanging foliage.
