Abstract:

This GIS data set represents inlets in the state of Florida. FMRI staff digitized these points based on the Tidal Inlet Protection Strategies for Oil-Spill Response documents developed by Research Planning Inc. (RPI) for the Bureau of Emergency Response (BER) to aid in oil spill response. The east coast, Florida Keys, and west coast inlets include the inlet category code from the Inlet Protection Strategies. The Inlets in the Panhandle, and some that were not included in the Inlet Protection Strategies documents, were taken from the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). Entrances to Bays, and unnamed inlets were placed using the 1:40,000 scale shoreline as background.

Purpose:

FMRI developed these data to graphically illustrate the Tidal Inlet Protection Strategies, and to show the location of inlets that were not included in the Inlet Protection Strategies. These data are for general cartographic purposes only.

Supplemental_Information:

Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.
Some of the points in the original "east coast inlets" were moved to better align with the 1:40,000 scale shoreline.

FMRI staff originally digitized these point locations "roughly", using the East Coast and Keys Inlet Protection Strategies as a reference. FMRI staff later reviewed that layer and moved some of the points closer to the actual inlet locations. Staff also added additional points for the west coast of Florida and the Florida Panhandle, based on the southwest Florida Inlet Protection Strategies, the GNIS placenames, and heads-up digitizing using the 1:40,000 scale shoreline.
