Abstract:
This GIS data set represents the oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. FWRI acquired the March 2012 update of these data from the BOEM Web site.
Purpose:
To spatially represent locations of oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.
Supplemental_Information:
Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.

BOEM does not restrict the distribution of these data. However, BOEM updates these data on an irregular basis. To ensure that the requestor receives the most current version of the data, they should be directed to the BOEM Web site. Data were developed with U.S. Government funding; no proprietary rights may be attached to them nor may they be sold to the U.S. Government as part of any procurement of ADP products or services.
Acknowledgement of the FWC-FWRI (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission-Fish and Wildlife Research Institute) as the data source, and the originator BOEM, would be appreciated in any products developed from these data, and such acknowledgment as is standard for citation and legal practices for data source is expected by users of this data. Please cite the original metadata when using portions of the record to create a similar record of slightly altered data, such as reprojection. Process_Description:
FWRI staff downloaded these data as an ArcInfo export file from the BOEM Web site. The data, originally in Geographic NAD27, were projected to FWRI's custom Albers projection. The coverage was then built for points and then loaded into the ArcSDE geodatabase using ArcCatalog.
