This GIS data set represents natural, dead, and restored oyster reefs in Mosquito Lagoon, Florida.
The severe loss of the eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) has encouraged different types of restoration efforts throughout its native range, including this area. Restoration focuses on providing additional substrate for larval recruitment. The simplest form of restoration is dumping new substrate material directly on the seafloor. Another technique is the use of mesh bags filled with oyster shells. These old restoration techniques are typically unsuccessful in areas with high boat traffic, such as Mosquito Lagoon, the northern most section of the Indian River Lagoon system. A unique restoration technique was developed by UCF to help address this particular problem. This new type of oyster restoration involves aquaculture grade mesh mats that measure 0.25 meter square in size. The mats have 36 oyster shells firmly attached to them using zip-ties so that the shells are perpendicular to the benthos, to maximize larval recruitment. To assess the current area of natural and restored oyster reefs within Mosquito Lagoon, aerial photographs from 2009 (provided by Saint Johns River Water Management District) were digitized using ArcGIS software. The live reefs, restored reefs and dead reefs were screen digitized in order to estimate the area of each type of reef. Using this information, a baseline can be established for oyster reef coverage in the area and demonstrate how oyster restoration is affecting current oyster coverage.
- Purpose:
-
The University of Central Florida (UCF) is documenting the spatial distribution of oyster reef and habitat within Mosquito Lagoon, Florida as part of the National Park Service study.
- Supplemental_Information:
-
FWRI staff have altered the original data provided by UCF to combine all oyster classes into a single data set, to include a 'TYPE' attribute to indicate which type of oyster reef is represented by each polygonl, and to reconcile sliver overlaps between the original source data. Please see Process Steps for more information.

These data are logically consistent. FWRI ran a topology to check for overlaps after combining the original shapefiles. All overlaps have been eliminated.

FWRI received the data from UCF. The data were originally four shapefiles: natural reefs, dead reefs, restored reefs, and future restored reefs (dated 2009-2011). FWRI added an attribute called TYPE which indicates whether a reef is a natural, dead, or restored reef. FWRI also reconciled some sliver overlaps between the classes that resulted when combining the source shapfiles.
