- Title: Waterway Navigation Routes Southeast United States
- Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data
- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
These GIS data depict navigational routes commonly used in Florida. Many of these routes are officially designated navigational channels or waterways. Others are just well known but unmarked pathways from one location to another. These data were digitized from NOAA Nautical charts (image files) of various dates and map scales, using most detailed charts for the area and feature of interest. Where depicted on the charts, channel centerlines and waterway routes were followed. Otherwise, AToNs depicted on the charts were used as guides to trace navigation pathways.
This data set does not depict all navigational pathways but should serve as a start to a more comprehensive data set.
- Purpose:
-
This data set was developed to display paths of navigation that boaters use in Florida. However not all of these pathways are channels or of verified depth. These data are not to be used for navigation.
- Supplemental_Information:
-
Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.
These data are not to be used for navigation.

A subjective classification of the navigational use of the feature; values are as follows:
Marked Channel - Large Vessel = Inshore navigation routes used by large ocean going vessels, found only in major ports. These are officially marked and maintained. Usually with large buoys as these routes are in deep water.
Marked Channel - Primary = Navigation routes heavily used by a variety of vessel types and capable of accommodating large commercial vessels such as barges. Usually major long distance thoroughfares. These are officially marked and maintained. The Intracoastal Waterway is included in this category.
Marked Channel - Secondary = Navigation thoroughfares often providing access to "Marked Channel - Primary" and ________. These are officially marked and maintained.
Marked Channel - Tertiary = Smaller navigation thoroughfares usually accommodating only local small boat traffic. These are officially marked and maintained.
Marked Channel - Local Terminus = Navigation route of limited distance providing ingress/egress for shore facilities. While these are marked the AtoNs can be privately maintained and not of same standards as officially maintained thoroughfares.
Unmarked - Local Terminus = Navigation route of limited distance providing ingress/egress for shore facilities. These are most likely not marked with AtoNs although some might be marked with small posts or stakes.
General Pathway = Commonly used navigational thoroughfare not marked by AtoNs. These routes often connect marked channels across bays, transit along the course of a river, though an inlet, between islands, or run parallel just offshore in open waters. The position of these routes can be "fuzzy" as navigation is often not constrained by water depth.
Offshore Route = Navigation thoroughfares commonly used by ocean going vessels in offshore transit between ports. Although not marked by AtoNs these thoroughfares might be delineated on charts as "safety zones." The position of these routes can be "fuzzy" as navigation is often not constrained by water depth.
Unmarked Shallow Water Route = These are routes of moderate distance requiring local knowledge for safe transit. It is usually a linear or winding pathway through extremely shallow waters. The positions of these data are intended only to indicate the presence of such a route. The position does not indicate the precise location of the route. In other words, do not use these data for navigation or you will end up aground.
Unmarked Short Cut = These are routes of limited distance requiring local knowledge for safe transit. These routes usually cut though navigation hazards such as oyster beds or sand bars. The positions of these data are intended only to indicate the presence of such a route. The position does not indicate the precise location of the route. In other words, do not use these data for navigation or you will end up on an oyster bar.
