Description:

Abstract:

This shapefile identifies locations, 2005-2010, of site and count data for beach-nesting bird (e.g., shorebirds) colonies in Florida. The Florida Beach-nesting Birds (BNB) website was launched in 2005 as a portal for entry and download of occurrence information and reproductive data for shorebirds nesting on beaches and sometimes rooftops along the Florida coast. These date were collected using unstandardized methods and have not been verifed (Refer to Use Constraints section for data limitations).
Long-term monitoring of shorebirds and seabirds across Florida is impracticable for any one agency or organization, and requires an extensive network of groups and individuals. The BNB Web Portal facilitates this collaborative approach by providing a central location for volunteer individuals or organizations to report biological information for data entry, compilation, and storage.

Purpose:

At the local and regional level, partners regularly rely on the data to plan and assess management activities for particular shorebird and seabird sites in their area. Data from the database are also used as a management tool for managers and permit reviewers to help them respond to situations involving nesting shorebirds and seabirds.

Supplemental_Information:

Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information.

Available without restriction. All data must be verified by Principal Investigator or Group Database Analyst prior to release. It is strongly recommended that this data is directly acquired from FWC and not indirectly through other sources which may have changed the data in some way. FWC makes no claims as to the data's suitability for other purposes.

Use_Constraints:

The BNB survey was not a standardized effort among Partnership members. These date were collected using unstandardized methods and have not been verifed. Use extreme caution when analyzing any dataset attributes other than species identification and geographic location, especially iwhen comparing with the Florida Shorebird Database (FSD), instituted in 2011.

The entire dataset (no filter criteria) was downloaded from the FWC BNB website (<http://legacy.myfwc.com/bnb/>). Fields were standardized, renamed with shorter descriptive headings, and records that were missing positional coordinates were removed . A '-' was added to the longitude for several points in the 2010 data where it seemed to have been overlooked upon data entry.
