Abstract:

This layer contains a range map of the Florida Black Bear current to 2008. FWC-generated this layer of black bear range by updating prior maps. This map is based on the 2004 map created in the Statewide Assessment of Road Impacts study, but updated in 2007 to include the coastal area of the Apalachicola bear population near the National Forest. The topology of this map was cleaned with Arcinfo in 2008 to resolve minor mismatches in node location; improving output from GIS analyses. Page 14 of the Road Impacts report includes this definition of bear range, "Within a GIS, contiguous cell blocks that were identified according to the presence criteria, available habitat, and the FWC Integrated Wildlife Habitat Ranking System (FWC 2001, Endries et al. 2003) were used to define primary and secondary bear range polygons. Primary range emphasized cell blocks containing evidence of females and reproduction. Additional factors such as habitat, general bear use, and roadkill were used to refine the delineation. Secondary range was defined outside of the primary range and included contiguous cell blocks identified as general bear use in addition to other parameters such as available habitat. Isolated or non-contiguous cells that were identified as occupied by bears were not included in the primary or secondary ranges. These range polygons were then used to generate an updated depiction of primary and secondary bear range distribution in Florida. In 2000, FWC generated a distribution map representing a subjective evaluation of primary and secondary bear range from 1998-2000 based on observations from FWC personnel (Figure 1)."
