Description:
Abstract:
Data are combined from individual projects in Florida conducted by various parties that were willing to share their data. This spatial dataset shows point locations for Florida black bears (Ursus americanus floridanus) throughout Florida located using VHF radiocollars. Descriptive data, including type of telemetry (aerial or ground) and type of location (e.g., visual, den site, location of dead collared bear or dropped collar) were preserved, if available, in separate fields. Bears can be found in almost every Florida county, but these locations represent only those documented from radiocollared bears. These VHF telemetry locations were compiled from research studies conducted by FL Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the University of Florida (UF), the University of Kentucky (UK), and the University of Tennessee (UT) and will be updated as future projects using VHF telemetry are completed
Purpose:
To provide a comprehensive spatial dataset of all known telemetry locations of black bears in Florida. These data are intended for visual interpretation only. CAUTION: Because of its comprehensive nature, the original datasets had different goals, purposes, and relocation schedules. Bear telemetry data have been used to determine the distribution, habitat use, home range, reproduction/denning, survival, and road crossing behavior of bears in Florida.
Supplemental_Information:
As an archive of past VHF radiotelemetry conducted by several researchers for various purposes, the descriptions and codes used for type of location, type of telemetry and habitat varies. Where possible, descriptive text for similar types of location and types of telemetry were edited to representative categories. Additionally, the original coordinates (UTM in NAD 1927 and NAD 1983) were preserved.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
1. PROJECT DATA: Original project datasets (often Microsoft Excel files in XLS format but also shapefiles) were provided to Brian Scheick by university researchers or FWC personnel (not necessarily those who conducted the research).
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
2. DATA PROCESSING: Attributes were added to copies of the original datasets for source (usually the project name) and researcher (lead agency researcher or all graduate students). Attributes of original coordinates were renamed to preserve native projection (e.g., “X” field name edited to “UTM_NAD27” if the Excel column title, study description, or GIS projection matched UTM 1927 projection). The edited copies of original datasets were compiled when they shared the same projection and datum.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
3. Each compiled and formatted dataset was then converted into a point shapefile in ESRI ArcMap 10.0 and the data were reprojected into Florida Modified Albers HARN. Once converted, all files were merged into a single shapefile.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
4. Date was used to pull out a year field for easier sorting. Several descriptive fields in the original datasets describing the type of telemetry method and the type of location method used for each, including comments, were reviewed and combined to two attributes based on obvious categories. Various formats for sex and age class (spelled out, acronyms, etc.) were standardized. Habitat codes were unedited because project publications did not provide definitions (likely the habitat codes were categorized for publication). Text in a comments attribute was preserved. Beyond standardization, the original attributes were edited as little as possible. Several projects radiocollared cubs to monitor cub survival but handled the cub telemetry data differently. For some projects, only the mother’s location was recorded in the telemetry database and confirmation that the cubs were with her resided in the comment field of the telemetry database or another database. Those other databases were not cross-referenced to add records for cub locations to this telemetry dataset. However, the data for at least one project contained separate records for each collared bear in a family but listed coordinates for just one family member (the coordinate fields for the other family members were blank). When a comment confirmed that all members were together, the missing coordinates were copied to complete the data.
