This spatial dataset is a compilation of 4 different spatial datasets from studies collecting black bear telemetry locations in Florida from 1983 to 2007. The following spatial datasets were included in this compilation: 'Bear Telemetry_A-Neils.shp', 'Bear_Telem_Ocala_wVegTypes.shp', 'Bear_Telemetry_2009.shp', and 'Black_Bear_Telemetry_Locations.shp'.
- Purpose:

To provide a comprehensive spatial dataset of all known telemetry locations of black bears in Florida. These data are intended for visual interpretation only. CAUTION: Because of its comprehensive nature, the 4 original datasets had different goals, purposes, and assumptions. Data from one study (i.e., 'Source' attribute) should not be combined or compared with another without close examination.

Acknowledgement of the FWC-FWRI (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission-Fish and Wildlife Research Institute) as the data source would be appreciated in any products developed from these data, and such acknowledgment as is standard for citation and legal practices for data source is expected by users of this data. Please cite the original metadata when using portions of the record to create a similar record of slightly altered data, such as reprojection. If any data are modified or adjusted, please share the edited information with FWC. Users should be aware that comparison with other data sets for the same area from other time periods may be inaccurate due to inconsistencies resulting from changes in mapping conventions, data collection, and computer processes over time. FWC shall not be liable for improper or incorrect use of this data. These data are not legal documents and are not to be used as such. This is not a survey data set and should not be utilized as such. These data are not to be used for navigation.

Varied and mostly unknown. Bear_Telemetry_2009.shp, another compilation of earlier data suggested that, "accuracy varies; aerial and ground telemetry error [are] often up to 200 m, or more." In A. Neils study the locations did not appear to be error checked (~76 records without UTM coordinates, ~70 with "N/A" in the coordinate field), and several with coordinate typos that plotted in the ocean, gulf, or far outside the county of that bear's other points.

Data in this dataset were combined from two telemetery studies: a graduate study on the movements of nuisance bears post-relocation to public lands, and a study on the movements surrounding SR 40 to study road crossings and mortalities. Use caution when combining the nuisance bear movements with other datasets. For example, the habitats used by the relocated bears may indicate those used during travel back to their establshed range, or those used when establishing a new territory and home range. The average distance moved daily also may differ greatly.

Duplicates were determined and removed from the 4 original datasets, by examining the shapefiles in ArcMap 10.0, both using 'Select by location' with a 5-m buffer, and by close visual inspection. Many duplicates were discovered (>30,000, leaving 39,716 unique records), most arising from the Locs dataset. Due to datum shifts, duplicate records did not necessarily spatially align; they were all within 5 m of each other. Locations with records that contained identical attributes were considered duplicates, and the record containing the most complete attribute record was retained. Several locations were collected multiple times on the same day. These were not considered duplicates and were retained by assessing all other attributes for differences.

X-Y coordinates were assigned to each table using 'Add X-Y coordinates' tool in X-Tools whille data were in Albers projection. Tables were imported into Microsoft Access where attribute fields were standardized for both data type and format. Tables were then exported into Microsoft Excel, where they were combined into one table. The final table was converted to a shapefile in ArcCatalog 10.0 using the x-y coordinates.
