Abstract:

This GIS data set represents the counties and shoreline of the state of Florida, including inland lakes and rivers, at a 1:100,000 scale. Data obtained from US census 2000 files were downloaded by county from ESRI's ArcData Online and MAPJOINed to form the statewide data set. The "water polygons" and "counties" data were used to create this data set.

Purpose:

This data set visually represents the counties of the state of Florida at a 1:100000 scale.

Supplemental_Information:

Prior to July 1, 2004, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) was known as the Florida Marine Research Institute (FMRI). The institute name has not been changed in historical data sets or references to work completed by the Florida Marine Research Institute. The institute name has been changed in references to ongoing research, new research, and contact information. Coordinates in the source TIGER/Line files have six implied decimal places, but the positional accuracy of these coordinates is not as great as the six decimal places suggest. According to the Census Bureau, "the positional accuracy varies with the source materials used, but generally the information is no better than the established National Map Accuracy Standards for 1:100,000-scale maps from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS); thus it is NOT suitable for high-precision measurement applications such as engineering problems, property transfers, or other uses that might require highly accurate measurements of the earth's surface."

The counties data were MERGEd in ArcMap to create a statewide counties shapefile. This counties shapefile was intersected with "fl_100k_2000" to create a statewide shoreline with county attributes.
