Abstract:

The Southwest Florida Water Management District (District) is responsible for the protection and management of natural systems and water quality within its geographic boundaries. One component of evaluating the ecological health of coastal ecosystems is to map and monitor submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) communities. This project is a continuation of previous efforts to determine the status and trends (if any) of SAV resources in the coastal waters of the District. The results of this effort will be used to determine the performance of ongoing efforts to improve water quality in coastal waters of the District.
This project will complete a detailed map of the selected benthic habitats along the Springs Coast region.

Purpose:

The overall goal of the mapping effort is the production of spatially and thematically accurate benthic habitat map for the 2007 timeframe using the DMC imagery

SWFMD 2007 Springs Coast Seagrass Mapping project used 1:12000 scale DMC imagery flown on April 2007. Due to due to water clarity area 5 Withlacoohee / Wacassa is not included in the photointerpretation of seagrass.

Attribute accuracy was tested by visual comparison of the aerial photographs with the seagrass data to ensure consistency with the classification system and photo signatures. Groundtruthing was also performed to aid in delineation and classification of photo signatures. Additional checks for valid attributes, as defined by the SWFWMD FLUCCS, were performed.

Polygon Topology present. All polygons were tested for closure and no dangles, slivers, or superfluous pseudo nodes exist. Every polygon has a label, every label has an attribute. There are no multiple labels within polygons, there are no contiguous polygons(adjacent polygons with the same attribute.)

Minimum mapping unit for FLUCCS categories is 0.5 acres. The study area boundary for the project was defined by the SWFWMD.

Avineon, Inc. conducted fieldwork throughout the project in order to assist with accurate identification of seagrass. The fieldwork was completed in order to identify and classify problematic signatures appearing on the 2007 aerial photographs.
