Description:

Abstract:: This shapefile contains the locations of black bear (Ursus americanus floridanus)captures in the state of Florida, where the end result of the capture activity did not result in the death of the animal (i.e. bear released on-site or relocated, or a cub taken into temporary holding for later release into the wild). The data were limited to those records obtained from the Wildlife Incident Management System (WIMS) database maintained by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and that were associated with a geographic coordinate.
Purpose:: These data are available for all people interested in black bear capture locations in the state of Florida.
Supplemental_Information:: Acknowledgement of the FWC-HSC (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission-Habitat and Species Conservation Division) as the data source would be appreciated in any products developed from these data, and such acknowledgment as is standard for citation and legal practices for data source is expected by users of this data. Please cite the original metadata when using portions of the record to create a similar record of slightly altered data, such as reprojection. If any data are modified or adjusted, please share the edited information with FWC. Users should be aware that comparison with other data sets for the same area from other time periods may be inaccurate due to inconsistencies resulting from changes in mapping conventions, data collection, and computer processes over time. Process_Description:: Staff records capture locations in the WIMS database as geographic coordinates, which were then exported into Microsoft Excel as a spreadsheet. Spreadsheet data were imported into ESRI ArcMap 10.3.1 as an XY event and converted into a point shapefile. The shapefile was QA/QC'd against county boundaries layer in data library. Questionable records were individually examined and corrected as appropriate.
